“Sit and stare at the starry sky. Be patient, It has something to share.”

“Sit and stare at the starry sky. Be patient, It has something to share.”

Illustration from Stay Home, Little Bear

Sometimes it takes a little patience to experience wonder. Patience to sit and be, to sit and stare at the starry sky.
I am trying to take more moments to sit and be, to feel the breeze and absorb nature’s palette. Even if it is just a few minutes…

This week I will be sharing illustrations from and inspired by my new book Stay Home, Little Bear. Get ready for some polar bear love and “a rainbow at midnight’” *Proceeds made from this book will be donated to heroes in the community making a difference during these uncertain times.

It’s available on Amazon kindle and Kindle Unlimited.

Happy creativity!

Thank you for visiting Bright Blue Balloon

Sometimes you just need to…STOP

I’m not exactly sure what Carson was looking at (or for) in this photo.

But it I made me think about stopping and smelling the blooms, ideal timing being Spring and all.

Sometimes you just need to

Stop

And smell the smells

Look up and absorb the blue

And clouds of tone

Sometimes you just need to

Take a moment in the moments to

Reflect

Rejuvenate

Sometimes you just need to

Spread your arms out wide,

Spin multiple times until you are dizzy,

Jump your highest jump,

Pick a stick or many

Maybe a rock or two

It seems a lot

But it’s not

Sometimes you just need to

Hold on tight to the string

Just over year ago I felt inspired to start this blog and instagram account (@abrightblueballoon). I had just started illustrating the children’s book I wrote about a bright blue balloon (entitled A Wonderful Thing to Win).

I have always loved to write and its been a part of my journey for quite some time. Additionally I have always loved art and being creative, this unfortunately was put on the shelf for a while. It was something I ironically never had time for.

My children have provided me with a world of creativity and joy which has lead to a rediscovery. An opportunity to clear the dust and explore. This is a place to share and be creative. It’s not easy to allocate time to this space with little ones but I am grateful when I do manage to make time.

Brightblueballoon.com is place to share stories, poems, drawings, photos and books we love. So far I love seeing where the bright blue balloon will float to next, what will we discover and where will it be?

This is a poem inspired by the bright blue balloon journey and the pages we turn.

Hold on tight to the string

Tie a loop in the string,

hold on tight

To the blue balloon, so bright

Float up, up ,up

And begin…

Soar through journeys told,

And yet to be discovered,

Journeys far or just a step in the cupboard,

Journeys with an important date – not to be late,

Journeys to woods of enchantment or caves of wonders

Look below

Remember the things you know

Look up

Soar high

Roam the sky

Question why

Learn the reasons

Enter worlds of imagination

Epic wonders,

Unique creations

Hold on tight to

The loop on the string

Absorb everything

Take a moment,

Take many

Pause and reflect

Before you float down, down, down

Reach the last page,

With the looming full stop

Breath

It’s complete

You are still you but more

Different to before

The words stay with you

They are now a part of your existence

Let them inspire

Let them be free

Until the next journey begins,

With the turn of a page

And once more you float up, up ,up

.

Book Release: Edinburgh City Festivity

Edinburgh is a fascinating place. It’s history and creativity accompany journeys along its cobbled streets, and with every step I can’t help but feel inspired.

It’s is here in this city where I have rediscovered my passion for writing and art. .

Over the past year I have come to understand the age old saying “You can do anything you put your mind to”.

Last year I wrote three children’s stories inspired by my boys. Deep down I knew they needed to be illustrated. At first I didn’t believe it could be done but slowly over time I started to believe that maybe it could.

Many, many late nights later I am so excited to say that if you believe in yourself you can!!!

Even if the deadline you gave yourself for the beginning of December turns into the end of December and even if you end up staying up too late. You can!

My latest book was inspired by the Edinburgh Christmas Markets and the joy it brings.

Edinburgh City Festivity is available exclusively on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited. It will be on promotion tomorrow for FREE download.

A Wonderful Thing to Win and Hoo at the Zoo are also available exclusively on Amazon.

As you enjoy the rest of the holiday season remember “You can do anything you put your mind to”.

Our beach of memories

We journey together, you and me

Creating a beach of memories

There are times when we walk barefoot over jagged rocks

Not knowing what will be more painful stepping or merely standing still

Then there are times when we walk over pebbles,

Rounded by stormy waters

The path still needs a careful step,

But it gently massages our tender feet

It humbles us and gives moments of splendour

The days when our feet touch the sand are the ones to be savoured

The waves offer rejuvenation as our toes anchor in the sand

We skip pebbles across the water reflecting on our journey

We sigh relief and smile contently

We journey together, you and me

Every grain of sand tells our story

Every step creates our beach of memories

Flow like the river

DSCN0889

Keep moving forward

Follow the path,

Whilst creating your own.

Erode challenges,

Build resilience.

Flow like the river

Adapt,

Change,

Grow.

Reflect light – both moon and sun.

Appreciate waters calm,

Prepare for rapids rough,

Accept the waterfall and

Explore new ways

Splash and play,

Carry something from everyday

Flow like the river

Keep moving forward

Make it your own.

A penny for the well-made-for-wishing

I came across a penny

And I knew it crossed your palm.

How long before?

I cannot be sure

All I know is it will lead me to you.

I followed the clouds to the well-made-for-wishing

I heard many stories along the way,

Little tips on know-how

And to cherish life’s chimes

I told my own story so far,

All the while holding the penny-

The focus at hand

The well-made-for-wishing appeared suddenly

Just as quickly I made a wish let it part from my palm

As it journeyed into the well I closed my eyes and thought of you.

It was here my fairy tale turned its page.

As moments later you appeared,

Frantically searching for your penny,

(The one that fell from your pocket)

(The one you saved for a single wish

Of love pure and true)

I came across a penny

And I knew it crossed your palm.

How long before?

I cannot be sure

All I know has lead me to you

We bid farewell to the well-made-for-wishing

And follow the clouds palm to palm.

Turning the pages of our fairy tale

Hold on to your balloon…

It’s rather windy here today. Strangely warm though! Make sure you hold on tight to your balloon. Don’t let it float away…

This is an illustration from A Wonderful Thing to Win. Where the bright blue balloon does float away but is discovered in an unexpected place. Owen and Carson make a rocket in order to bring it home. They use materials found in the recycling box. An adventure follows as they soar up, up, up to retrieve their bright blue balloon.

“If the balloon floats up, up, up until they can’t see it anymore

They’ll soar up, up, up until they bring it home once more”
