Take inspiration from L.Frank Baum

Something wonderful happened in 1900 when L.Frank Baum, age 40, decided to explore his hand at something new. After trying a number of professions he had the courage to try writing. This resulted in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

A copy of this classic tale practically jumped off the shelf during a recent library trip. This is our current family read and we are turning the pages with anticipation and wonder. What will happen next, when will we meet Oz and the Witch of the West.

What an inspiration to think L.Frank Baum started writing at the age of 40 and (according to Wikipedia) went on to write “14 novels in the Oz series, plus 41 other novels, 83 short stories, over 200 poems, and at least 42 scripts.” Where would we be without The Wonderful Wizard of Oz? What if he never explored writing? What if he didn’t have the courage?

One of the themes of the book is just that, courage. Discovering courage and finding it within, something we all have.

Ultimately we all have something within us that is waiting to surface. All you need is the courage to try, to act, to explore. Let this talented author be your motivation to move forward. It’s not late, in fact the time is just right. Learn to play piano, write, draw, run a marathon, whatever it is you find yourself frequently thinking about. “You have plenty of courage, I am sure,” answered Oz. “All you need is confidence in yourself. There is no living thing that is not afraid when it faces danger. The true courage is in facing danger when you are afraid, and that kind of courage you have in plenty.” ― L. Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

What inspires you to create?

I like to find inspiration from experiences of all varieties. Things we do or experience or learn about.

As of late I have found inspiration from frequent little visitors who illuminate the night. Fascinating fireflies of course! This is something I haven’t experienced before so it’s all new and exciting and the latest inspiration for a poem!

A collaborative solo

Fireflies stopped by

Lighting the sky with their reasons why

Shining bulbs of light

In a moment out of sight

Soon enough repeated

A unique show,

sporadic glow

A holistic spectacle,

Of unsyncronised light

A collaborative solo

Illuminating the night

Sometimes you just need to…STOP

I’m not exactly sure what Carson was looking at (or for) in this photo.

But it I made me think about stopping and smelling the blooms, ideal timing being Spring and all.

Sometimes you just need to

And smell the smells

Look up and absorb the blue

And clouds of tone

Sometimes you just need to

Take a moment in the moments to

Sometimes you just need to

Spread your arms out wide,

Spin multiple times until you are dizzy,

Jump your highest jump,

Pick a stick or many

Maybe a rock or two

It seems a lot

But it’s not

Sometimes you just need to

How to make your dream a wish come true

Last night my five year old, Owen, asked if he could go to space. I said yes, yes you can. Anything you want, anything you dream. If you believe it you can achieve it but it takes hard work and focus. I felt inspired to write the poem below.

How to make your dream a wish come true

Wish a dream

Make it big

Make it high

Anything above

Or below the sky

Take one step,

Take many

Believe it,

You can achieve it

A word of caution though my child,

Something you should know

To make your dream a wish come true

It needs a bit of reality

It’s not enough to wish a dream

Just wish and you may just miss

It takes more,

So go explore

Set goals both big and small

Be proud

Stand tall

Be humble

Accept help

Take a break

Get back to it

Be positive

Focus your energy

Make a list

Tick the list

Have fun

Remember it’s a journey

Design a rocket

Build a rocket

Test the rocket

Launch the rocket

Blast off…

Arrive in space

Float around

Look up and down

Take a moment

You’ve achieved,

And you dreamed it for a while.

High five

You did it

I knew you could and would!

Wish a new dream

Make it big,

Make it high,

Anything above or under the sky.

Hello – this is me

Hello – this is me

I like to drink tea

(And the occasional coffee)

I live with my two sons

And best friend – hubby,

Always trying to find the balance

Between chaos and creativity

The corner of the home I call my own

Is a rediscovery,

A journey,

A passion not lost but put on hold

Here I explore through

Writing, drawing and photography

Here I am, this is me
